Remembering the life of

Ignatius Gavin

Waterford / Glenamaddy, Galway

Family and friends remember Ignatius (Iggy) Gavin as a gifted hurler, talented fiddle player, and proud Galway man whose warmth crossed oceans. Born in Ballyhard, Glenamaddy, Iggy’s early life was shaped by community, tradition, and the vibrant rhythm of a musical home. Stories recall his time in goal for Erin’s Own in the 1961 county final and his representation of Galway at senior level, a sportsman with quick hands and a calm heart. But it was the music too, his fiddle playing, that left its own echo, cherished by neighbours who remembered the joy it brought to their doors.

Though Iggy made a life in Whitestone, New York, alongside his beloved wife Norma for over six decades, his Irish roots never faded. He carried Ballyhard with him, its humour, its humility, and its pride. Iggy lived quietly but fully, loved deeply and remembered kindly by nieces, nephews, and all who knew him. He leaves behind a life that touched many across continents, with a gentle soul that now rests peacefully.

Late of Whitestone, New York City. Formerly of Ballyhard, Glenamaddy, Co. Galway. Iggy passed peacefully in Whitestone, New York on Sunday the 10th of August 2025. RIP.

Predeceased by his parents, Bridget and Jack; his sister, Christine; his brothers, James and recently, Tony

Iggy will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Norma, his nephew, John; his nieces, Ann, Claire and Laura and his sister-in-law, Eileen. Iggy will be fondly remembered by all his extended family, relatives, wonderful neighbours, and many friends.

May his gentle soul rest peacefully
