Family and friends remember Nicholas McElhinney, Nick to all who knew him, as a warm-hearted, funny, and kind man whose sudden passing has left hearts broken in Waterford, Leicester, and beyond. Mischievous from an early age, his friends from English Martyrs School fondly recall his “goofy antics” and ability to make people laugh; there truly was never a dull moment when Nick was around. Later in life, his kindness, humility, and quiet strength found a home at Garter Lane Arts Centre, where he became a much-loved and valued member of the team. But to those closest to him, Nick was first and foremost a devoted father to Niamh, a cherished son, and a gentle soul with a soft spot for his dogs, who were rarely far from his side.
His memory now lives on in the stories shared: the friend who remembers him picking up partygoers with a smile, the colleague who called him “incredibly kind,” and the neighbour who will never forget his wave at the garden fence. As one friend wrote, “There won’t be a day that goes by where you’re not remembered.” The McElhinney family thank everyone for the outpouring of support and invite all who knew Nick to remember him with love, laughter, and pride. Photos of Nick’s life, and funeral support can be shared through RIP Ireland.
