Remembering the life of

Martin (Mar) Marks

Military Barracks, Waterford City, Waterford, X91YF6R

Family and friends remember Martin Marks, known lovingly as “Mar”, as a kind-hearted man who built his world around loyalty, laughter and love. He grew up on Barrack Street and later settled in the Military Barracks with Kathleen, the love of his life, where they raised a family full of character and care. A proud father to Vicky, Martina, Donna and Martin, he lit up whenever he spoke about his grandchildren and great-grandchild, and was already looking forward to meeting the next generation. Martin was happiest when surrounded by family, whether that was playing darts with friends, reminiscing in the heart of Ballybricken, or having a quiet chat outside the house with a neighbour passing by. He lived a full and grounded life, shaped by hard work, real friendships and the joy of simple things. The kind of man who saw the good in everyone, he made you feel seen, valued and never rushed.

Many who knew Martin have spoken from the heart in recent days. One friend said, “To Martin’s family and friends – so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Martin in our younger years in Kiely’s Brewery. Even in our later years, whenever we met, he always had time for a chat.” A loving grandson wrote, “Rest in peace Grandad, I love you and miss you so much. I know you’re not with us in body but in spirit – and that’s a comfort I’ll hold on to for life.” A neighbour remembered him as “a true gentleman who always had a smile and a chat for everyone – I’ll miss our little talks.” Another tribute simply read, “You’ll be sadly missed. Rest in peace in heaven Martin.” And perhaps most movingly, a granddaughter wrote, “I’ll meet you in paradise Grandad – have a party in Lanzarote for us until we meet again. This isn’t goodbye, it’s I’ll see you very soon.” Martin’s legacy lives on through those words, through the family he adored, and through the many lives he touched with his warmth, humour and unshakable loyalty.
