Remembering the life of

Marion O’Mara (née Connors)

Drumcannon, Tramore, Waterford

Family and friends remember Marion O’Mara as a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, neighbour and friend, and as a woman whose life of care, integrity and service left a lasting mark on Waterford. Late of Drumcannon, Tramore, Marion was dearly loved by Jim, Jennifer, Eoin, Niamh and Aoife, and by her brothers Michael and Thomas, her sister Bridget, her extended family and all who shared in her life. Many remember her from her long years with The Waterford News & Star, where she was described as “the heart and soul” of the paper, a journalist who was “straight, true, reliable, skilled” and generous with her time to younger reporters finding their way. Others spoke of how Marion took them under her wing, offered guidance and encouragement, and combined rigorous reporting standards with great humanity.

Marion is also remembered as a true champion of community, someone whose warmth, wisdom and commitment continued to serve Waterford through her work with the PPN, Waterford Older People’s Council and Age Friendly Ireland. She was described as a woman of decency and good nature, a passionate advocate for older people, and someone whose “selfless dedication and unwavering passion” enriched the lives of others. Friends, colleagues and neighbours remembered her kindness, her strength, her smile, her good advice, and the many conversations that stayed with them long after. May Jim, Jennifer, Niamh, Aoife and all the O’Mara and Connors families find comfort in knowing how deeply Marion was loved, how widely she was respected, and how powerfully her kindness, courage and voice will continue to be remembered.

Late of Drumcannon, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Formerly of The Waterford News and Star. Marion passed peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday the 17th of August 2026. RIP.

Predeceased by her beloved parents Thomas and Josie.

Marion will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Jim; her daughter Jennifer; her adoring grandchildren Niamh and Aoife; her brothers Michael and Thomas; her sister Bridget and her son-in-law Eoin. Marion will be fondly remembered by all her nieces, her nephews, her extended family, relatives, neighbours, and many friends.

The O’Mara family would like to thank with great appreciation all the staff in the Community Palliative Care team and the Night Nurse Service for the excellent care and attention Marion received throughout her illness.
