Family and friends remember Tommy Collins as a true gentleman, a wonderful character and a devoted family man whose stories, humour and love of a good chat will be greatly missed. Late of St. John’s Park and formerly of Árd Na Gréine, Waterford City, Tommy was Evelyn’s beloved husband, a much-loved Dad to Catherine, David and John, and a cherished Grandad and Great-Grandad to a family who clearly meant the world to him. Again and again, those who knew Tommy remembered the pleasure of his company, the chats and laughter they shared with him and the stories he loved to tell. Friends recalled playing cards with Tommy in Walsh’s in Ballybricken and Norris’s Bar, while another tribute captured his personality beautifully: “If heaven has a dancefloor, Tommy will surely be on it.”
Tommy will also be remembered as someone who made time for people and brought fun into the lives of those around him. One family friend fondly remembered how taking the children to the circus or pantomime was always “Tommy’s job”, while holidays were approached with his familiar attitude of “sure we will all go” because, as they remembered it, nothing was ever a problem to Tommy. Others spoke of his wonderful stories, his knowledge of family history and a life lived to the fullest. Predeceased by his brothers Stephen and Michael and his sisters Mary and Nancy, Tommy leaves behind Evelyn, Catherine, David, John, Nellie, Jack, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a wide circle of relatives, neighbours and friends. May they find comfort in the laughter, stories and everyday memories they shared with a man described so often and so affectionately as one of life’s true gentlemen.
