Family and friends remember Joseph Kiely as a man of quiet strength, deep integrity and unwavering kindness, someone whose goodness was spoken of with enormous warmth by all who knew him. He was remembered simply and powerfully as “an absolute gentleman,” “one of life’s true gentlemen,” and “a man of true integrity,” a person who carried himself with humility, decency and a generosity of spirit that left a lasting impression wherever life brought him. Colleagues from Portlaw Tannery and later MSD Ballydine remembered Joseph as a dependable and valued friend, “always willing to help,” with one former workmate reflecting that it was “a pleasure to have known him.” His quiet goodness, steady character and genuine kindness earned him lasting respect from neighbours, friends and everyone fortunate enough to share in his life.
Joseph’s name is also spoken with enormous respect in Clonea, where his contribution to hurling became part of the fabric of the club he loved. He was remembered for the “immense work” he gave to hurling, for his “selfless contribution… as a player, administrator and coach,” and as a “legend in Clonea GAA Club,” whose wisdom, dedication and love of the game left a lasting mark. He remained a proud Waterford supporter to the very end, “always expecting a day out in Croke Park.” Above all, Joseph was a devoted husband to his beloved Kathleen and a deeply loved father to Grace, whose loving presence by his side in his final moments beautifully reflected the closeness they shared. His was a life of loyalty, humility and quiet service, and that gentle example will remain his enduring legacy.
