Family and Friends Remember Finbarr (Timothy) O’Mahony as a gentleman of great warmth, intellect, and generosity, someone who left a lasting impression on colleagues, students, friends, and neighbours alike. Described by many as “larger than life” and “a life force,” Finbarr was deeply admired not only for his knowledge, but for the encouragement and kindness he offered to others, particularly in his decades at WRTC and WIT. Former students spoke of the confidence he instilled in them. Colleagues recalled his wit, his friendship, and the everyday conversations that lifted the mood of a corridor or a classroom. “A presence,” one friend said. “A gifted man who gave so much to others.”
His impact stretched far beyond his work. Tributes poured in from the Male Voice Choir, from old friends, and from those who met him during his illness, all of whom remembered his generosity of spirit. One colleague reflected, “He helped me many times at the start of my career… I will always remember him.” Another said, “He told us of his big plans at retirement; tragically, his health got in the way, but still, he made such a difference.” Across all messages, the common thread is clear: Finbarr brought light, humour, and encouragement to every part of life he touched. The love and respect expressed by those who knew him are a testament to a life lived with depth, humility, and heart.
