Family and friends remember James Guiry, known fondly to so many as Jimmy, as a true gentleman, a great character and a deeply loved family and community man. Late of Ballymorris, Dunhill and formerly of Johnstown, Kilmeaden, Jimmy was devoted to Frances, to Terence, Noel and Mick, and to the grandchildren who brought such pride and joy to his life. Those who knew him speak of “the nicest man,” someone who “always made time for a chat and have a laugh,” and a man who greeted life and people with warmth, humour and an open heart. One neighbour remembered him with “always a smile and something funny to say,” and a familiar wave from his window whenever someone passed by.
Jimmy’s life is remembered in the everyday kindness he gave so freely. Friends spoke of the chats, the banter, the handshakes, the craic and the stories that made him such a pleasure to meet. Fenor GAA remembered him as “a gentleman who was so generous with his time and knowledge,” while Dunhill GAA honoured his years as a player, first aid man, mentor and committee member. Many also remembered the care he showed to children on the school bus, with one tribute saying, “He cared for everybody especially the children he ferried to school every day.” Another message captured the measure of Jimmy’s life beautifully: “Jimmy was the best example of how to live your life well. Everyone was an equal as far as Jimmy was concerned.” May Frances, Terence, Noel, Mick and all the Guiry family find comfort in the love surrounding them, in the countless memories Jimmy leaves behind, and in knowing that he will be remembered with laughter, gratitude and deep affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
