Family and friends remember Samuel Thomas Driver Senior as a remarkable man whose presence was felt across generations, countries, and communities. Originally from Co. Wicklow and later settled at Coolgower Lodge on Tramore Road, Sam was a man of wisdom, humour and quiet resilience. He was devoted to his late wife Flo and beloved son Austin, and his love for them was something he carried always. A proud father to Thomas and a doting grandfather to Camilla and Sam, Sam’s world revolved around family, nature, and simple joys. He found meaning in his faith, his roots in Quaker tradition, and in the lasting friendships he built through work, community and travel. Known for his storytelling, resourcefulness and wit, Sam left a deep impression wherever he went, from the fields of Carlow to the conversations on the Tramore Road.
He is remembered fondly in messages from across the country and beyond: “Rest in peace Uncle Sam. Reunited with Auntie Flo and Austin. You often said you missed them so much.” Another shared, “So sorry for your loss Thomas and all the extended family. Sam was a lovely man with a fabulous sense of humour. He will be sorely missed.” A former colleague remembered, “I had the pleasure of working with Martin in our younger years in Kielys Brewery. He always had time for a chat. One of the good ones.” From Medical 5 came the words, “He was a gentleman. I looked after him and he had such a kind way about him. May his gentle soul rest in peace.” Sam leaves behind a legacy of independence, depth, and generosity, a man who stayed true to his beliefs, who raised a strong family, and who lived every day with intention. In the words of those who knew him best, he was one of life’s rare and special souls.
