Hi everyone, Erich here. While the days can still feel cold and wet, I feel it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on something timeless and truly special, right on our doorstep: the dolmens of Waterford. These ancient structures have always fascinated me—not just for their rich history but for the deep connection they create—to the past, to nature, and to one another.
Living in Tramore and being part of this wonderful community, I’m constantly inspired by the rich history that surrounds us. Today, I want to share five dolmens that are not only easy to visit but also rich in heritage, natural beauty, and the promise of an unforgettable day out as the weather improves.
Nestled in the charming village of Dunhill, this dolmen is a treasure. The dolmen, with its towering stones, feels like a portal to another time. After visiting the dolmen, take a walk along the nearby Anne Valley Trail, which winds through wetlands and woodlands, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a family outing.
Knockeen Dolmen is a showstopper, standing tall with its striking double capstone. On my last visit, I marvelled at how these stones, so massive and heavy, were carefully arranged by our ancestors over 5,000 years ago. After exploring the dolmen, you could take a forest walk or enjoy a picnic.
This dolmen, located just outside Waterford City, is one of the finest examples of a portal tomb in the country. My wife and I got married here, making it an incredibly special place for us. Every time I return, it brings back such cherished memories of that day. After visiting the dolmen, consider stopping by Mount Congreve Gardens, a spectacular destination known for its stunning seasonal blooms and peaceful walking paths.

Close to Dunhill, Ballynageeragh Dolmen is another must-see. Its open countryside setting offers breathtaking views, especially during sunset. Last time I visited, I packed a picnic and enjoyed the serenity of the surroundings. For those seeking more adventure, the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark is nearby, offering scenic drives, geological wonders, and rugged coastal beauty.
Though technically a passage tomb, Matthewstown shares much in common with dolmens and is well worth a visit. Located near Fenor, this site is surrounded by peaceful farmland. I spent a morning here with a flask of coffee, enjoying the tranquil beauty of the area. Nearby, the Fenor Bog Nature Reserve provides a unique opportunity to explore a thriving wetland ecosystem, ideal for nature lovers, personally I think Fenor Park also offers Waterford’s best playground. A must for all parents with young kids.
Why Dolmens Matter
Dolmens are more than ancient stones. They are a window into Ireland’s pre-Celtic past, representing a time when communities came together to honour their dead and celebrate life’s cycles. These structures, often considered passage chambers, symbolised a bridge between this life and the next. For me, standing before a dolmen is always a humbling experience—a reminder of the strength and ingenuity of those who came before us.
Falconers and the Dolmen Connection
At Falconers, the dolmen is more than just a logo. It represents strength, support, and the belief that life continues in some form beyond death. Our handcrafted dolmen at our funeral parlour in Tramore is a proud nod to this heritage. It symbolises the lasting connections we help families create during life’s most significant transitions. Just as these ancient stones have endured for millennia, so too does our commitment to providing compassionate care and meaningful services for families in Waterford.
This belief in connection inspires the way we write our “Family and Friends Remember” paragraphs on our death notices. These words are more than tributes—we aim to capture the essence of a person through the eyes of those who loved them most. We take the time to listen and craft messages that reflect the unique life of each individual.
Condolences and shared memories are acts of love, forming a goodbye that honours the beauty of human connection. At Falconers, we are privileged to help families create these meaningful tributes, empowering you to celebrate, grieve, and say goodbye in a way that truly matters.
Plan Your Visit
As the weather improves, why not plan a day to explore these incredible sites. Each dolmen offers a unique glimpse into history, set against the stunning backdrop of Waterford’s natural beauty. Bring your family, a friend, or even just yourself for a day of reflection, exploration, and connection with our shared heritage.
Let’s take the time to appreciate the treasures we have right here in Waterford. Share your experiences and let’s celebrate the rich history and stunning landscapes that surround us.
